Carbon Footprint

Our campus is always on the move and in need of energy; whether it is for using computers, doing the laundry, cooking food or shedding light on our lives at UCU we are always using electricity and a lot of resources.

As we are studying at a college which aims to enlighten us about pressing world issues it is important that we all become more conscientious of our own contribution to environmental problems and try to implement these ideas into our lifestyles. It is not only ideological arguments which are involved in the whole discussion but also more practical ones, which impact directly on our student expenses which need to be taken consideration. As electricity costs for UCU as a whole are expected to double this year, we all need to be more rational on our use of energy from now on as these expenses will weigh directly on our increasing tuition fees for UCU.

Due to all these developments, ASIC has been looking into ways to study these issues more and find more solutions for improving environmental friendliness. The first measure we have been thinking of is creating a carbon footprint of campus in order to understand better where we are being wasteful and how we could be reducing our use of energy. For this reason we are looking into contacting groups or companies that are specialized in improving the environmental efficiency of organizations and asking them to conduct a thorough analysis of units on campus.

Although this expertise might imply certain expenses on the part of ASIC, we are always looking forward to suggestions and project prospects from students about how to implement small environmentally friendly habits into our daily lives so, if you have ideas, please feel free to email us or drop by the ASIC office during office hours.
